Social media mindfulness is important but people are not at all following it. To help in better understanding,  I have listed the PES (problem, effect and solution) of social media.

The Problems

  • 200 mins is the average time spent by Indians in a day using mobile apps.
  • 40% of our time is spent on social media
  • 90% smartphone increase since 2013-17
  • All age groups are impacted

The Effects

  • Addiction resembles effects of drugs and alcohol
  • Anxiety from FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out
  • Social Media Depression
  • Battered self esteem
  • Herd/Crowd Mentality
  • Constant comparison (social media envy)
  • Need for instant award/gratification
  • Craving for admiration, rise of narcissism

The Solution

  • No access to social media till 10 am and after 9 pm.
  • Limit the number of sessions per day and the duration (5 is recommended).
  • Let go of social media one day in a week.
  • Uninstall the apps you don’t need
  • No phubbing – favouring phone over a real person.

This can be very effective and will be effective for social media mindfulness.
