Social media mindfulness is important but people are not at all following it. To help in better understanding, I have listed the PES (problem, effect and solution) of social media.
The Problems
- 200 mins is the average time spent by Indians in a day using mobile apps.
- 40% of our time is spent on social media
- 90% smartphone increase since 2013-17
- All age groups are impacted
The Effects
- Addiction resembles effects of drugs and alcohol
- Anxiety from FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out
- Social Media Depression
- Battered self esteem
- Herd/Crowd Mentality
- Constant comparison (social media envy)
- Need for instant award/gratification
- Craving for admiration, rise of narcissism
The Solution
- No access to social media till 10 am and after 9 pm.
- Limit the number of sessions per day and the duration (5 is recommended).
- Let go of social media one day in a week.
- Uninstall the apps you don’t need
- No phubbing – favouring phone over a real person.
This can be very effective and will be effective for social media mindfulness.
