What are your hobbies? What do like to do besides studies? As a 90’s kid, I remember we were so familiar with this question which often followed after an obedient namaskar to every new uncle and aunty we were introduced to. We seemed to have enough time then and hobbies were born from the heart out of interest and passion.

But gradually with the peer pressure of becoming someone in life many other things were left behind. With shrinking time grain, we tend to forget what we loved doing for the sake of living a programmed life.

Not very long before that, I realised the exact need of hobbies and the significance it holds in any one’s life. When the graph of flowing life shows real up-downs and you need to stay calm and positive focus with your mental stability intact, hobbies can save you.  When your nothing- I -can–do- now time phase engulfs you with all-powerful depressing hands hobbies can give you that exact anchor you are looking for. In my case books and reading a lot has always been my saviour, friend, guide everything I sought for.

A hobby is an amazing art of calming your mind. It can be anything both indoor (right from cooking and trying different cuisines) to outdoor (like gardening).  It is a purposeful activity engaged to soothe your inner being. The ultimate anecdote to self-care.  A self-care regime has five components. They are emotional, physical, social, professional and spiritual. All these self-care components are intricately related to the mental well-being of any person. Apart from eating well and exercising your body another important concept that is often overlooked is the cause of mental health. Well-being can never be wholesome without considering mental health. The benefits of hobbies are manifold. But most importantly hobbies help to break down the monotony of our daily lives and helps to build up concentration and focus in a productive and positive way.

But starting a hobby out of the blue as an adult can be confusing. To reclaim your lost interest when you as a person is already lost in the daily doings is indeed a tough game. Options may seem to be sometimes silly, sometimes lame and even tiresome to start middle of an age.

The following 3 pointers can help in restoring and replacing back hobbies in our lives:

  • Unplugging from the technological web: Technological web basically social media robs us of hours of valuable time which we would have used otherwise. Allotting ourselves with limited timing on technological gadgets will eventually provide us with some saved time for some productive activities. Unnecessary social interaction causes soaking within us many unwanted emotions which deprived us of our mental well-being.
  • Practising self-nurturing activities: Try new options go for doing things that you feel inclined to. Give yourself some time and hear your inner child out. There is always something unattended within us. Feeding the un-nurtured mind that brings happiness to your being is actually therapy in itself.
  • Balancing work and leisure activities: All people around the world have the same calculated daily intake of hours in hand. But balancing the different priorities is the basic mantra. Time management self-discipline and saying no to procrastination can help a lot in creating a perfect balance in one’s life. And thereby saving few hours for the work that we loved the most.
