Kavitha shouting by watering lovely plants in her garden ” Hannu! Wake up, go bring manure for our plants.”

“ No, mom, I will bring it later,” Hannu replied to her mother from his bedroom.

Kavitha with increased heart rate, “No! you have been telling this for one week. Go get it now.”

Hannu searching pen to write the assignment that needs to be submitted by today, “ Mom, I will bring it tomorrow please, I have an urgent submission today.”

“ ahh! You have been procrastinating since you told me that you will bring manure. And the delay might be the reason for not submitting your assignment till the last day too.”

Hannu submitted his assignment online and brought manure after getting rebuked by his mom.

Does anyone of you relate to the situation that Hannu has been through?

Yeah! Of course, every one of us in our life will. Procrastination is one of the major things we usually find difficult to get rid of. Procrastination is nothing but delaying things that need to be done. This is mostly quite common for many of us. But this is the only habit we have to shut out to complete our things in time. We do not usually observe ourselves when we say we can do it tomorrow. That tomorrow will be postponed to tomorrow to tomorrow and then it continues. It doesn’t just stop there, it continues for so long until something goes wrong.

Why does procrastination happen?

Generally, the present is very important for many of us who procrastinate things just like Hannu. He spent all the days with fun when he needs to do the assignment which doesn’t affect his present. But he did it in the last moment to save his present because he may get a bad remark from his teacher. According to behavioral therapy, a human brain tends to give priority to the present rather than the future. Basically, the future of a human wants to be fit and healthy where the present of the same human will let him eat fried crispy noodles topped with schezwan sauce. Researches have discovered that getting influenced by the present self is the major sense for a human to procrastinate things in their life. It is not that difficult to get rid of when we follow these simple tips to avoid procrastination.

Here’s how we can avoid procrastination

Reinforcement: Reward yourself when you successfully complete work without procrastinating. This boosts you up to continue the same for the rest of your works. Self-appreciation is highly recommended. when you honor yourself with a small gift, that will make you repeat and to get accumulated to this habit. This also helps to respect yourself.

Imagine: Imagine you in the middle of all the project papers you need to submit, the grocery list you need to bring, cleaning as guests are visiting your home, washing clothes since you did not for a week. Very hectic right? When you imagine yourself with heavy loaded work, you will surely start working on your project to submit it in time(even a single task). This really helps at least to start the work you need to complete rather than procrastinating.

Make chunks: Some times the difficulty of the work we need to do also makes us postpone it. Hence, divide your task into smaller parts rather than doing the whole at once. This helps to perceive your very huge work also into a very minuscule.

Visual To-do list: Write down the things you need to do in a day on a stick notes and stick it where you spend more time like right at your bed or to the charging plug of your mobile. Write only five a day or at least two to three a day where you can complete entirely. Whenever you see, that list reminds you to do that work. It also helps with self-motivation. Tick the things once you are done on the notes and that gives you great satisfaction.

Commitment: Avoid the activities which divert you from the important things for example if your Netflix account has expired, do not update your payment until you are done with your job. Make a promise to an important person whom you love the most. You will do it at least for the person’s sake to gain their impression. Be responsible enough to the promises you have made.
