Recently, I have read an article describing about the characteristics of time. The author described that time has two distinct features, quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative feature is that aspect of time which can be measured, that is via clocks, stopwatches and the like. While the qualitative feature of time is something which can be used to gauge what is the actual cost of the activity you have indulged yourself into, i.e, via your emotions, thoughts, and henceforth. Let me elaborate on this.
For example if you have attended a class from 11 am to 1 pm, The quantitative aspect of it is equal to 2 hrs. But the qualitative aspect involves answers to questions like ‘How did you feel about the class? What did you learn from it?’ so on and so forth. This aspect of time cannot be measured and quite ironically, we term those times as Memories.
People often say words like “Time is money, Time is precious, Time once lost cannot be undone.” The reason why time is considered crucial is because no-one born as a human can alter it, they have absolutely no control over it. And time flows the same throughout all ages for everyone, the reason why we feel that it’s going too fast or too slow sometimes is the way our brain perceives the qualitative aspect of it. The qualitative aspect of time may vary from one person to another because of the differences in one’s habits and lifestyle too. For instance, a millisecond might be very crucial for an athlete than for a normal person.
Another classification of qualitative aspect is a good time and bad time. Good times give us more returns than usual and bad times may give slightly less returns for the same effort of work performed by us. When we are going to lose someone out of our life, we recollect all those memories we cherished together with them. When we find we had only few memories together, we regret of not spending enough time with them. Also, when you’re actually with someone who makes you laugh and be happy, we might get greedy and hope they stay with us for eternity. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why our beloved movies and celluloid drama revolve around the topics such as time machines and rebirths. Because we truly and desperately want to undo that past fight or trauma or simply to borrow some more time to enjoy our life with those whom we love the most.
Let’s go through the question of ‘Can we really do it?’ Think about it, If we really do find a way to meddle with time, maybe we may go back and undo it. But for how many times? Everytime you have a fight or an unpleasant experience, you may go back and avoid/amend it, But with this your relationship with those people remain unchanged. The other person may feel fishy as to how can you not get angry over something and be good to them all the time. Also, I do believe that the universe has its own way of establishing order. you can dodge one bullet, but not all of them. With this, you will also make time lose its importance and misuse it for your own good.
The author finally said something which moved me, “The reason why we feel something as important is because during its presence, we do not realize its functionality and take things for granted. Time has three states – past, present and future. Past is our performed present and future is our delayed present, therefore what is important is our present.” So spend this present having no regrets!
All times whether good or bad visit us once in a while by taking different forms because it might be the way in which the Supreme force wants us to have. We might not be able to comprehend its nature and feel confused and agitated, but once it is gone, we might fully understand its importance and explore various options which were not explored before. Some say that we might achieve this understanding through age and experience, But I say that Age is just a number. People might have a huge time gap, but it is all experience which accounts for a greater comprehension of time complemented with the attitude towards it. On a final note, I wish everyone may get those experiences in their lives which can be a capstone for their success and abundance. May you get cross those hurdles and unleash your true potential. Fighting!
