Did you ever wonder why you feel sleepy in that one particular room? Or why looking at nature makes us feel good? Out of many reasons that are present, color is one of the most powerful reason. My favorite colors are red and black, but they always did not make me happy.

I did a little research and found out how different colors are associated with various personality traits and symbolism. Colors are also responsible to fluctuate our moods. Let’s see what each color has to say and how we can use each color to our benefit:

PS: I understand that colors are subjective and not everyone will be affected in the same by a color. So, the content of this article is generalized.

1) Green: Whenever someone mentions nature, we think of green. I think it’s safe to say that nature brings peace to almost everyone. Since green is associated with nature, it is often said to represent tranquility, good luck and health. Spiritually, the color green is tied to our hearts and helps in fighting depression. It is said to give a calming effect which is why it is used in green rooms. The objective of green rooms is for the actors or performers to relax before they go on to the stage. It is eye soothing and creates a sense of harmony. So, if you are thinking to redecorate, it will be helpful if you give a green touch to your family room.

2) Red: How does red make you feel? It is mostly tied with feelings of excitement and intensity. It evokes strong emotions. It makes most people feel energized, powerful, and confident. It is stimulating and creates a sense of urgency, which is why increased appetite is associated with red.

Using red in food chains would be very helpful. For example, KFC excites us all, does not it? Red is also tied to strong first impressions which stimulate conversations. Decorating your living room with red can help you with that. Lastly, if you are looking for some exercise motivation, wear a red outfit and notice the difference.

3) Blue: Sky? Isn’t that what blue reminds us? Like green, blue is also said to have a calm affect on our mood. They have physiological effects on us like lowering blood pressure, slowing down heart beat and calm breathing. It produces a sense of security and serenity.

For all the above reasons mentioned, it is said that blue reduces anxiety too. Next time you are anxious, you know what to do.

Blue is also linked with productivity, which is why most offices are decorated with blue.

Since it produces chemicals in the brain that calm you down, and at the same time is tied to productivity, it is also suggested to decorate your bedroom with blue.

4) Yellow: It is undoubtedly the “happy” color. Since it is a bright color, it evokes strong emotions like happiness. It is most tied with optimism, energy and cheerfulness. Yellow is also used as an attention grabbing color, which is why most notices, buses, advertisements, etc.

The downside of yellow is that since it is an energetic color, it can get too intense and that energy can turn into impulsivity and aggression. You might not want to take decisions after being exposed to yellow color. On the other hand, just like red, yellow is also increases appetite, which is why yellow is also most commonly used in fast food chains.

5) Purple: Where do you think you see purple the most? Beauty products. Purple is often associated with royalty, luxury, power, magic and creativity. It is very good at attracting people. It is also said to be an introspective color, allowing us to connect with thoughts that are deep inside of us.

Since it also has calming effects over our mind and our nerves, and since it can trigger our imagination and creativity, having our study room decorated with purple seems appropriate. Purple triggers problem solving too.

6) Pink: As we all know, it is the combination of two opposite colors, red and white. While red promises passion, white is tied with purity and openness. Pink is tied with love, kindness and affection. Pink drives away negative feelings like anger, pain and gives a comforting feeling, like everything is okay.

Try wearing a pink outfit if you want to make a good first impression. It is vibrant, attractive and refreshing. People most likely get good vibes from pink.

7) Brown: How many of you thought of chocolates? Everybody is fond of chocolates. Can you imagine chocolate to be of any other color? Me neither.

Brown gives a sense of security and naturalness. It brings you down to earth. Most people have decorated their houses with brown. Why? It gives a sense of protection and support. It is a very safe and reserved color.

There are many more colors to talk about. There are many more shades within the colors that I mentioned above to talk about. However, I mentioned these particular colors because of what they represent. Once we are aware of them, we can use them to our advantage.

Since the time I got to know about this, I started actually following them. I bought more of red colored clothes for exercise. I started looking for yellow and red colored things whenever I got upset or low. Whenever I’m about to take irrational decisions, I look for green color. I am someone with anxiety issues. Therefore, whenever experience anxiety, I look for blue. I’m not saying it is 100% effective, but it does help for sure.

It directly does not affect us but subconsciously it taps our moods, emotions and brain chemicals.
