A sunny day, everyone to their works. Everyone was rushing. It was a busy and a tiring day, nothing seemed to be relieving and refreshing. But then suddenly, clouds became all greyish and kind of thundery. Cool breeze began to drift, touched my skin. The lightening, the thunders and the miraculous sound of life-giver came whistling through the sky. And there it comes, the first rain of the season. Small drops of heaven kissing my face, sliding down and taking away all my pulls and giving me a great heart rush.
Do you know the feeling that you get when a little baby laughs? It makes you wanting to love life so much, that’s what rain does to me. By definition, you can say that I am a Pluviophile, i.e., someone who love the rain. I feel that it is just mesmerizing. The pitter – patter sound of the rain, the hypnotic way each and every drop magnifies and changes the scenery, pearl shaped drops on the leaves and the cold wind, everything about rain is so beautiful and lively. And the best part, whenever it rains, we have the perfect excuse to drink tea and eat Bhajia (a kind of fritter), and just sit there in the balcony and enjoy.
I still remember going to school in the raincoats, paddling through the bicycle and trying not to get wet. But I also remember that, returning back, if it was still raining, I would never wear the raincoat and come back home, with my friends, all wet and extremely happy. I am grateful to my mother for never scolding me, for coming home all wet, she loves rain too. Then there are the small colorful paper boats that I guess every one of us made and helped it sail through the little stream of water.
Rain is like love; it comes when our souls are ready to feel something riveting.
The richness of the rain makes me feel so safe and protected. I have always considered the rain to be healing, like a warm blanket giving comfort to a friend. The thirst of all beings on this earth is satisfied and sustained by it. Like love, rain is warm, compassionate and empathetic.
- Happiness researcher, Dr. Matt Killingsworth, used an app called “Track Your Happiness” to have his samples report their level of happiness during specific activities in real time. What he found out was that there is a direct link between happiness and getting lost in the moment of playfully splashing through puddles, created because of rain.
- Vice quotes therapist and anxiety and depression specialist Kimberly Hershenson, explains that, “Rain produces a sound akin to white noise. The brain gets a tonic signal from white noise that decreases this need for sensory input, thus calming us down. On the other hand, bright sun tends to keep us stimulated.”
- Psychiatrist at NYC’s Manhattan Neuropsychiatric, Julia Samton, says that, “I encourage people to really try to make sure they walk outside when it rains. Even though it might not seem that light out, you’ll still get some exposure to UV rays, which can help regulate your body’s circadium rhythm and boost your mood”.
- Mental Health writer and expert Emily Mendez, says that, “Rain has a regular, predictable pattern. Our brain processes it as a calming, non – threatening noise. Which is why there are so many relaxation and meditation videos that feature the sound of rain”.
- According to a 2016 study, odor evoked memories are more emotional and evocative. Rain has aromatic memories. Those of us who love rain, associate it with positive feelings from our past, because of the sweet subtle fragrance that tints the air before and after a rain.
The most beautiful thing about rain is that is feels like a new beginning. A fresh start. It gives a kiss of life to the nature. It brings in a new generation of leaves and flowers. It is a boon for the farmers. It keeps our rivers, oceans, seas and other water bodies in healthy condition. We as humans are in constant need of rain water for domestic use after filtering it. And then there is of course, the smell of the earth that overwhelms the air after it rains; that pleasant, earthly scent, known as petrichor, is caused by the release of specific chemicals when the rain reaches the ground.
Rain drops, felt today as new,
My heart melted as wind blew,
Embraced myself today,
And am up against all dismay.
Yes, happiness caught me again,
As sadness went down with drops of rain,
Felt again as am weird and insane,
As today am out of my flashback’s bane.

And then when the rain stops, and the sun comes up, the nature again blisses our eyes and our soul with the beautiful scenery and the stretch of 7 colors, rainbow. Rainbow is perhaps the closest things we have to real magic. They appear like beautiful apparitions in the sky.
Fun fact: You might not even see the same rainbow as another human because a few lucky humans are born with an extra cone cell that seems to allow them to see more colors.
