This sketch is from a collection of art journal sketches that evolved over time from use as a personal coping mechanism into a series of publicly shared images.
The sketches use an intuitive art approach which explains the rough nature of much of the work. I do not allow drafting beforehand or editing or redrawing afterward to produce “finished” pieces. The aim is not to produce “perfect” art, but to capture raw emotion by bypassing the cognitive urge to plan or self-edit.
I began this work, simply for myself; to express my emotions and to cope when overwhelmed. On entering therapy, I learnt that this is actually a symptom known as alexithymia, common in trauma related disorders and that the art could be more than just a way to vent; it became a form of communicating to myself and others things I was unable to verbalise. It is also a tool I have been able to use to increase my ability to understand and verbalise my emotions via discussions and feedback from others around the drawings.
