OCD. It’s a small word but a word with so much depth. It is a bundle of feelings, pressure, confusion and pain.
People blindly say, in normal daily life, “I have OCD.” But it’s not a joke. It’s really more than just being particular about things. It is a mental disorder. Its more than keeping things at its place. Its more than just caring for somebody. Its more than looking for jobs done.
I am a young adult and people my age, do get these things wrong. It has only been one year in hostel and college, but the life there has forced me to think many things thoroughly.
My suitemate, once said, after keeping a towel to its place when her roommate threw it anywhere, “Oh my God, I have OCD.” None of us said anything, and we just laughed. But this was not it. A girl from my class was telling a story one day about how she doesn’t like things to be not neat and not clean. She also said, “I always do this, I don’t know why. Maybe I have OCD”.
But since I am telling stories, I want to tell a story that would change your perspective about having OCD. It’s not from my life story.
A friend of mine and his family had a maid. She would wash her hands continuously after touching objects for dusting or placing. Every night, at around 11:00 p.m., she would bathe after doing all the work. And this happened each and every night for many years. So, every night, bathing with cold water that too from the head, the maid got hypothermia. Hypothermia is a condition in which the body loses heat within faster than it is produced. It is a potentially life – threatening condition that needs immediate medical attention because the body temperature drops down to 95 F. But she died a few days after that.
So, you see, the maid actually had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which resulted in her death. Constant exposure to cold water this late at night resulted in hypothermia. This was not just a result of being clean.
People overthink everything when they have OCD. They overthink their every action, firmly involved in battle for control. It may bring on shame, scorn, anger and intolerance from friends and family. Life can become very problematic, because this way of thinking and acting is very difficult to overcome, especially since the obsessions have no point and are traumatic for person. It is necessary that these people get the help that they need.
