I wish people would understand the importance of mental health. Just because you can’t see that there is something wrong with my brain as you can see a broken bone, does not mean it isn’t detrimental and devastating to an individual or their family.

One of the simplest things to understand about mental health is more often than not the most difficult thing to explain to someone. However, I find myself not trying to make you understand why mental health is important, but rather make you understand what a person in that position feels and in more detail to help you understand that just because one may be going through an issue doesn’t mean something is wrong with them, or rather does not make them ‘broken’.

In the simplest words to define ‘broken’ is something that cannot be fixed. But why are we under the pretext that we need to be fixed? When one endures a physical sickness, a simple visit to the doctor is all that is needed to be fulfilled for that individual to be healthy again. However, when the mind is sick, our society brands this as a person who is broken because simply, they cannot understand these people. And they are not to blame, for centuries we have been taught the same thing. The only difference is that now instead of torturing them in asylums we call them out in the terms of verbal torture when someone tries to reach out to make themselves better.

In reality, we have all been knocked down by life. We have all experienced hardships and loss in our ways. We have no right to compare our grievances with others and therefore must also take responsibility for what we may be going through. In the truest sense, we all must endure the challenges ahead of us to reach an end goal in life. However, more often than not we find ourselves at a crossroads and sometimes need someone to guide us into making the right choice. This doesn’t mean we aren’t capable of making that decision ourselves. Nor does it imply that there is suddenly something wrong with us just because we were able to make the other decisions and now suddenly need help with this one.

It may simply mean that each of us requires fine-tuning. For if we assume every individual to be a guitar each born into this world with the perfect tuning, we must, in all our basic knowledge about instruments know that at some point we all will need tuning. Some may need it earlier than others and some may need it more frequently, but in the end, we do come back a perfectly tuned guitar.

There are always certain things I can highlight that one should do to not feel this way, but rather this time, I chose to point out things that we automatically do in the daily lives that allow us to achieve this fine-tuning.

  1. Accepting and embracing change:

Change isn’t always easy and sometimes will pop up when we least expect it to. And more often than not, the change will always lead us down those crossroads where we are desperate to make a decision. Instead of fighting this and trying to go back down the path, you came, learn to accept the inevitable. Embrace it to know that things will turn out for the better. Resisting this will only cause you to go out of tune.

  1. Remember to always be in the present:

A quote states; ‘Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is yet to come. We have only today and therefore let us begin’. This highlights one of the most important things in our everyday lives. We can always daydream about the past and how we could have improved this to reach that, or think about the future and how you can do this to achieve that. And therefore, more often than not we forget to live and enjoy our present, we bog ourselves down with stress and pain from the past that we are so afraid to let go off that we don’t realise it creeps into every decision we make in our present, therefore impacting our future. I realise that this is always going to be one of those things that are easier said than done, but it will always be one of those things that makes your present happier and guarantees a simpler future.

  1. Remember to accept the mysteries of life:

It is important to remember that no matter how hard we try we can simply never control everything about our lives. There will always a large number of variable factors that will always be out of our hands. And therefore, spoiling your mood over something that cannot be physically changed by you is not worth risking your mental well-being. Rather, accept those things out of your hands and try your best to succeed in the ones you can control.

No matter what I have said today, I will always know through personal experiences that these things are ‘easier said than done’. However, if one can keep even one of these three factors in mind, we will learn to live a little more worry-free than before. The only thing that one can hope to take back from this is, that no matter what they say, your mental well-being is not a sign of weakness. You are not broken. We like every individual out there just requires a small tweaking before we can go ahead to be our musical selves.
