As a community when we stand on the apex of life, a slight push can trigger us to fall or rise. While working at the forefront with vulnerable children, teenagers, and youth in general, drives me to visualize the dark side of our society. At this moment when we are having our discussion with social workers, psychiatrists, government authorities, and those who claim as ambassadors of the social system, there is chaos and confusion. As, in the poem proposed by an Irish poet, William Butler Yeats who wrote ‘The Second Coming’ in 1919. Here he drew through the lines ‘Turning and turning in the widening gyre, The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold’, in the poem that I take as a foundational stone describing the state of my community.
We all are standing and wondering as to how we could guide the children who recently lost their parents, how we can console the teenagers whose parents have lost their jobs, how do we rationalize with youth who are covered with negative thinking, how can we supply to the needy, how can we give a helping hand to the families who are waiting near the gates of hospitals and losing their loved ones, how can we motivate our forefront workers and share their work.
This mind-mapping of how, why, when, who, what, where keeps dancing all over our minds as we fail to find answers to these. Those gazing stares with tears dropping down haunt us and the anger of helpless people covers us. Will tomorrow we be able to have a normal life? Will we be able to see our children play? Will we be able to help our older parents? Will love expand more or hate? Many questions are left unanswered.
Our children are suffering within the four walls. Addiction to social media has increased with a change in lifestyles. Our community workers are stigmatized due to the current situation. We have lost the sensation of seeing, holding hands, and having the feeling of existence. Mental health is a growing concern and considering only a single-digit percent is given from our government concerning mental health, it’s time we challenge and create newer policies.
We need to help insecure minds to cope. As per my observation, mental health needs to be in the curriculum taught in schools and colleges. Every institution needs to unite and share both strengths and weaknesses. The world needs more role models who are socially connected instead of being self-centred. It’s up to us to walk past the concerns of others and save ourselves or try to create safe spaces for all to join and work in collaboration. Our acceptance of successes and failures makes us humane and allows us to open our arms and reach out. The world at the moment needs a virtual hug and the assurance that we all exist and we all are there to fight back and excel as a team. This will give birth to humanity and when we become indifferent and judgmental, it will then stop our existence. So let’s reflect and change mindsets in giving birth to Humanity than curbing it down!
