What is Minimalism
Minimalism is the idea of intentionally living with things one really needs. It is initiated with clearing the physical clutter around you i.e. your area of work and living which means your home and office space.
Not only in our surrounding space, minimalism can also reflect a state of our mind, where we declutter our mind so that we can focus only on things that really matter.
Physical Minimalism: Clutter Free Environment
A clutter free environment not only gives you more space but also reduces your stress. By being a minimalist in a society driven by consumerism, you consciously decide to stay away from the clutter by not buying things that are not needed and living with the things that you only really need. You can do with one jacket for the coming winter than have a closet full of jackets and sweaters. Imagine the time and effort it will take to maintain all of them. You start decluttering your home and work space by doing away with things you don’t need and keeping things that you really need.
There are different types of minimalists depending upon the degree of minimalism one wants to practice. The central idea revolves around you maintaining a lifestyle with minimum possessions. As minimum as you are comfortable with; which give you a sense of freedom in terms of space, time and of course financial savings.
Mental Minimalism: Decluttering the Mind
Mental decluttering is as important as decluttering the space around us. It entails getting rid of our negative and unproductive thinking patterns such as self-loathing, self-doubt and self-pity along with the more obvious ones such as envy, past troubles, our failures, and the constant voices in our heads – essentially all the unimportant things, all the trash we fill our minds with.
This mental clutter is self-sabotaging and cripples our mind of ideas, positivity, peace and creativity and fills it with complications, stress and suffering. No wonder then, just like our physical space, our mental space needs getting rid of the junk too.
Benefits of Minimalism
- Creating More Space – The feeling of having too many things around you will make you claustrophobic. When we declutter, we make space for us to have a free flow of energy around us. This will help us feel light.
- Saving Time – Imagine the time wasted searching for an item we want. When we declutter, we have a space for everything, and everything is in its place. This helps us to avoid the stress of panicking when we don’t find our favorite T-shirt because we know exactly where it will be.
- Saving Money – The practice of minimalism will help you to save money in the long run because you will stop spending on items you don’t need.
- Sense of Balance – Doing away with the norm takes courage. Once you decide to stay away from consumerism, you will start feeling confident about yourself. The choices you make are yours and are not influenced by society which tells you to buy the latest gadget, the newly launched “limited edition” luxury watch etc. The sense of control brings in a sense of balance as you are in tune with your needs.
- Mood Booster – Throwing negative thoughts and past regrets out of the window boosts our mood as it allows for a fresh inflow of positive and constructive thoughts.
- Anxiety Reduction – Physical as well as mental decluttering both lead to reduction in our anxiety levels. Non-messy space and non-messy mind gives us a sense of calmness.
- Heightened Creativity – Once our environment is decluttered and our mind is trash free, creative juices are sure to flow high. That’s when productivity increases, and ideas germinate.
